While completing my BA at St Thomas University, I took two English courses with Dr Tony Tremblay, a man who has a passion for Canadian, and in particular, New Brunswick, literature. One of the assignments that I completed in his class was to write an encyclopedia entry on a New Brunswick literary figure, and he asked me to write about Bliss Carman.
This task was somewhat challenging as writing for an encyclopedia is very different from any other writing style. Your work must be concise and informative. I went through several drafts before reaching my finished product.
A few months after completing my encyclopedia assignment, Dr Tremblay told me that he was creating an online resource on New Brunswick literature and asked if he could include my entry on Bliss Carman in the encyclopedia. Of course I was very excited and said yes!
Completing this assignment showed me first-hand how making students' assignments purposeful can really encourage them not only to complete their work, but to do their best. As a teacher, I will strive to create assignments that students can really dive into and which will result in a feeling of accomplishment.
